About The Barons of Torryn

I’m an old-school gamer and a published author. I cut my teeth on the original “TOP SECRET” RPG from TSR back in the mid-1980s, along with Gamma World and AD&D (1st Edition). I have also at other points played a bit of Shadowrun (1st Edition) and Rolemaster, and when Kenzer & Co. came out with Hackmaster, it was the logical progression for all the stuff in my old AD&D world to follow.

Now I run primarily Hackmaster. I have a homebrew campaign world that I started in 1987 or so, and I get a thrill out of the world-building side of gaming probably more than anything. My main campaigns are all 100% original, from the world, to the history and culture, to the adventures themselves.

When it comes to my original campaign material, I’m most heavily influenced by the works of Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, Jack Vance, and Michael Moorcock, though some other authors have of course added to my preferred flavor over the years, including Terry Goodkind, Fritz Leiber, Gary Gygax (of course), and Louise Cooper.

Additionally, some of you may know me as Demosthenes from the Kenzer forums.

This particular blog is about one of my Hackmaster campaigns, which takes place in the rather remote, back-woods province of Torryn in the Midrythian Empire, a sprawling nation that takes up a significant chunk of the southern portion of my primary homebrew campaign setting.
